We visited the Super-Pit, a huge excavation just next to the town, 600m deep & 3.5km wide. At the bottom of the pit you could just make out the giant Tonka toys they use to carry out further excavation. The scale of excavation is simply incredible and a sight to believe.
A visit to the Royal Flying Doctors visitors centre showed some of the history of this important rural service. I wrote down their emergency number – just in case!

The kids highlight was I'm sure a trip to McDonalds in Kalgoorlie. This is the first time we've been since the start of the trip, and it was an unexpected pleasure for all.
We had to make an important decision today, do we head south to Esperance or go west towards Perth? The outlook for the rest of the week was rain on the coast so we made the bittersweet decision to head to the city. We're going to miss out on a spectacular part of the country that we will have to come back and visit at a better time of the year. The flip side is that we are heading into Perth to stay with friends, Allan & Vikki and their daughter – so we'll have a roof over are heads for a couple of days while we catch up on old times.
We camped at the Koorarawalyee Rest Area, 68km east of Southern Cross, a well laid out free camp site. We parked near another delightful couple – David, Sue and Zach, their dog who have been on the road since 2000! We shared a great campfire, watched the shooting starts in the night sky, played some music, chatted and listened to stories until late with a glass or two of port.

Hi Vin and Ralh fam, we are all enjoying the pics and commentary you are obviously having the time of your lives. If you are still in Kal go and say hi to the Onsite guys at Lot 42 Great Eastern Highway , particularly Ken Popplewell. He would love to meet some friends of mine who have traveled so far and would make you a cup o tea for sure.
