Day 68 – Cervantes (Pinnacles) – Cliff Head 9th June

True to form we were unable to get up at dawn, eat and head to see the Pinnacles at sunrise. Our best efforts meant that we still didn't get there until after 9.00am. It was a quick drive from Cervantes to the Pinnacles Desert in the Nambung National Park. We were expecting to see a few limestone formations and were surprised by the extent of the area the Pinnacles covered. We did both the walk and the dirt road loop drive around the Pinnacles with the walk being the most enjoyable due to its more immersive nature.

We stopped to view the Stromatolites, formed by some of the oldest organisms in the world (3,500 million years) at the Lake Thetis foreshore, next to Cervantes. A boardwalk made sure you didn't do any damage to these creatures – which were responsible for consuming carbon dioxide and bringing so much oxygen into our atmosphere. To be honest they aren't much to look at, what they are responsible for give them their importance.

We had been suffering from the wind for the last few days and we picked a sheltered camping spot by Cliff Head. This site sits along a beach offering a number of free sites with a million dollar view of the sunset.
