Day 69-70 – Cliff Head – Greenough - Coronation Beach 10th -11th June

Our first stop of the day was Greenough. This was a settlement from the 1860's that is now deserted and run by an WA trust. The town with its old schoolyard, churches and houses offered a good view of life fin the last century for its windswept community. The tourist information centre is well run, with great food, excellent coffee and friendly and informative staff. Robyn liked the range of souvenirs....and we played giant snakes and ladders which was a lot of fun.

We drove through Geralton, stopping at Bunnings to buy some replacement chairs. Then it was off to Coronation Beach to camp. Coronation Beach at $15/night offered cheap camping with a view. There was time to try some fishing but not even a nibble. The kids enjoyed playing on the beach, making forts out of the sand and seagrass.

Someone caught an octopus!

We took a day drip to nearby Geralton and visited the local museum for its displays of ship-wreck history. The Dutch East India Company's Batavia provided us particularly gruesome history of life when a large number of people were ship-wrecked in 1629. There's also a very poignant display of the sunken HMAS Sydney in WWII which was only located in 2008.

The winds picked up again in the early hours of the morning and I had to take down the incessantly flapping tropical roof. We secured the camper-trailer canvas walls with ropes and pegs and looked enviously at the nearby caravans.
