It had been a very cold night and in the morning frost covered everything in a blanket of white. We were informed it had got to minus three!
To warm up, we walked along the small trail at Lillydale to see its local falls, Then it was time to say goodbye to our new friends and head onto the second largest town in Tasmania – Launceston. First we stopped off to visit Cataract Gorge, where 19th Century Victorian style landscaping had made its best efforts to tame the bush-lands surrounding the gorge. The kids bounced along the suspension bridge and we had morning tea amongst the peacocks.
The highlight for Robyn and the kids was the hot water-bottles they bought. It was a funny sight with the five of them lining up at the chemists with a different coloured water bottle each. The shop assistants and the other shoppers queuing up behind our troop had a good chuckle... but our family didn't care as they excited for the forthcoming heat at their feet.
Wondering where to stay that night, we took a punt and drove on to Liffey Falls, which took us along some great meandering road, amongst the farms and along the base of the Western Tiers. Liffey Falls, was a terrific spot that we ended up having to ourselves, surrounded by forest, fireplaces and most importantly a great flushable toilet. We eventually had success lighting a fire, cooked a warming stew and with our tummies filled, went to bed. Robyn, industriously filled up five water bottles and she and the kids finally had warm nights sleep hugging the water-bottles between their feet.
